Neuravena is a standardized wild green oat extract for aging individuals who wish to maintain more youthful cognitive health and performance.

With age, our brain’s levels of dopamine—which regulates mood and cognition—begin to diminish, leading to a corresponding decline in mental performance. This dopamine depletion is largely caused by rising levels of an enzyme called monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B).

Published studies show that by inhibiting MAO-B, this bioactive wild green oat extract promotes healthy dopamine levels. This MAO-B inhibiting mechanism has been shown to support mental acuity and longevity. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in aging volunteers, researchers demonstrated that 1,600 mg of the same wild green oat extract produced a 74% improvement on a standard test of mental acuity. In soon-to-be published research, 800 mg of the same extract supported mental processing time and speed. In other research, this extract exhibited support for cerebral vasodilator function, as well as endothelial function—both of which play roles in brain health.

The suggested dose is one tablet daily for the first week. If desired results do not manifest, increase the dose to two tablets daily or more as needed.

Do not use with any prescription or otc drugs. Do not use with any dopamine or phenylethylamine supplements in high doses or any supplements that raise blood pressure or heart rate.

Chronic consumption of a wild green oat extract (Neuravena) improves brachial flow-mediated dilatation and cerebrovascular responsiveness in older adults.

BACKGROUND:

Heart health benefits have been attributed to regular consumption of oats. Preclinical evidence suggests that a wild green oat extract (WGOE) may improve vasodilator function, but this is yet to be evaluated in humans.

OBJECTIVE:

To determine whether regular daily consumption of WGOE can influence vasodilator function in systemic and cerebral arteries.

METHODS:

Thirty-seven healthy older adults (>60 years) completed a 24-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled two-way crossover dietary intervention with 1500 mg/day of encapsulated WGOE or placebo. All assessments were conducted at the end of each 12-week intervention arm, after participants had fasted for at least 4 h and at least 18 h after they had taken their last dose of supplement. Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery and hypercapnia-induced increases of blood flow in the middle cerebral artery were used to measure systemic and cerebral vasodilator responsiveness (CVR), respectively.

RESULTS:

Compared with placebo, WGOE supplementation increased CVR and FMD to a similar extent (42 and 41%, respectively, P < 0.01 for both). The improvements in CVR and FMD were not correlated. Resting blood pressure did not alter with supplementation. Dose and treatment duration were well tolerated by participants.

CONCLUSION:

WGOE supplementation can improve vasodilator function in systemic and cerebral arteries, suggesting a potential role in the maintenance of cardiovascular health.

Acute effects of an Avena sativa herb extract on responses to the Stroop Color-Word test.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS:

Extracts from oat (Avena sativa) herb may benefit cognitive performance. This study investigated whether Neuravena(®), an oat herb extract, could acutely improve responses to the Stroop Color-Word test, a measure of attention and concentration and the ability to maintain task focus.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS:

Elderly volunteers with below-average cognitive performance consumed single doses (0, 1600, and 2400 mg) of oat herb extract at weekly intervals in a double-blind, randomized, crossover comparison. Resting blood pressure (BP) was assessed before and after supplementation, and a Stroop test was performed.

RESULTS:

Significantly fewer errors were made during the color-naming component of the Stroop test after consuming the 1600-mg dose than after the 0-mg or 2400-mg doses (F (1,36)=18.85, p<0.001). In 7 subjects with suspected cognitive impairment, Stroop interference score was also improved by the 1600-mg dose compared to 0- and 2400-mg doses (F (1, 34)=2.40, p<0.01). Resting BP was unaffected by supplementation.

CONCLUSIONS:

Taking 1600 mg of oat herb extract may acutely improve attention and concentration and the ability to maintain task focus in older adults with differing levels of cognitive status.

Ingested oat herb extract (Avena sativa) changes EEG spectral frequencies in healthy subjects.

OBJECTIVE:

This study aimed at using quantitative assessment of human electric brain activity during mental work for determining acute effects of ingested oat herb extract on cognitive performance.

DESIGN:

Within a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study, two dosages of a special oat preparation of Avena sativa herba (1250 or 2500 mg of Neuravena®) were compared to placebo. An electroencephalogram was recorded while the patient had eyes open for 6 minutes, eyes closed for 4 minutes, performance of a concentration test (d2) for 5 minutes, and performance of mental arithmetic (KLT) for 5 minutes. Source density was calculated and spectral frequency changes were averaged to give one value for each frequency range.

RESULTS:

Using quantitative brain mapping technology (CATEEM®), main effects were observed in the left frontotemporal area, known to be involved in cognitive tasks. Statistically significant differences were observed during resting (lowering of spectral δ power) and during performance of the d2-concentration test (enhancement of spectral θ power) (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively). Also, during performance of mental arithmetic, greater enhancement of θ power was observed but only at a lower error probability (p = 0.115). No effects could be seen using the P300 paradigm during presentation of a visual stimulus.

CONCLUSIONS:

These changes suggest that oat herb extract might be effective in healthy subjects, resulting in a positive impact on cognitive performance.

Jocelyn Mathern, M.S., R.D., Frutarom’s Technical Health Manager, reported that twenty healthy men and women between the ages of 38 and 53 participated in the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover clinical study. She said that a single dose of 2500 mg of Neuravena or a placebo was administered.

Mrs. Mathern stated, “Over a four hour period, the subjects’ baseline brain activity signals were recorded and analyzed. Brain activity was also measured while the subjects were exposed to mental pressure during a concentration stress test.”

Mrs. Mathern explained that in the study, each frequency range characterized the activity of specific signaling substances in the brain and in different brain regions as related to certain tasks (such as cognition). The study monitored the overall pattern of brain activity, finding that Neuravena® influenced changes in human behavior.

Changes in brain activity

Brain activity of participants was found to be significantly changed by Neuravena®. A considerable decrease in delta and theta wave activity was observed, particularly in brain regions closely connected to cognitive performance. In addition, alpha2 wave activity increased. These changes were also related to improved concentration, learning, memory and stimulating properties.

Mrs. Mathern said, “The study demonstrated that Neuravena® improves overall mental fitness in everyday life and can help to avoid dips in cognitive performance during the course of the day. Furthermore, electrical brain activity during the concentration stress test was significantly increased for both theta and delta waves in the Neuravena® group. This finding confirms that Neuravena® positively influences brain activity under pressure and may help to improve concentration, learning and alertness during stressful situations.”
